Winning Local History Project: Bayside

On Tuesday 6 December the History Council of New South Wales awarded Bayside Council the Macquarie-PHA Applied History Award for its 2021 project: A park for the people: Jack Mundey and the Eastlakes Green Ban.

The Macquarie-PHA Applied History Award encourages historians to produce a creative work of applied history drawing on their research and promotes the value of public history.

"This is an amazing exhibition, congratulations to everyone involved in this wonderful project," Mayor Dr Christina Curry said.

"I encourage all residents to visit the George Hanna Museum located in Mascot Library and learn more about our local history."

A park for the people: Jack Mundey and the Eastlakes Green Ban was a collaborative project which included an exhibition and audio-visual presentation at the George Hanna Museum, social media posts, an interpretative plaque in Jack Mundey Reserve, and a scholarly article written by Alison Wishart for a general audience and published on Overland Journal's website.

The award is a citation and $1,000, which will be allocated to the Local History budget for the purpose of conserving and promoting the Eastlakes collection.

The next exhibition at Mascot Library, Swimming in Botany and the Bay, opens on Tuesday 3 January 2023.
