Work is progressing on an important road safety project at the intersection of Barkly and Bancroft Streets Bendigo.
The $1.4M project is being undertaken by the City of Greater Bendigo as part of the Safe Travel in Local Streets program, funded by TAC and the Victorian Government's $1.4 billion investment into road safety. These works will improve safety in the area particularly for students at the Catherine McCauley College senior campus.
The works include:
- construction of new roundabout;
- installation of new kerb and channel;
- intersection upgrades at Valentine Street and Barkly Terrace West, and Bancroft Street and Rosalind Street;
- installation of two new bus bays in Valentine Street;
- installation of a new pedestrian crossing in Barkly Street at the entrance to the college;
- removal of the Barkly Street slip lane to create a new parkland area.
City of Greater Bendigo Engineering Manager Ian McLauchlan said the project is in response to a number of crashes in the area and the need to protect the high number of school students and other pedestrians who use the area.
"This is an important project that will help reduce the speed of vehicles around the school and provide greater pedestrian safety along Barkly and Bancroft Streets," Mr McLauchlan said.
"It will also result in new bus bays in Valentine Street and a new school crossing and more formalised parking in Barkly Street. An existing slip lane from Barkly Street to Bancroft Street will be removed and a new parkland area will be created."
The project has been designed in-house by the City's Engineering staff, construction is being undertaken by the City's Works staff and the new parkland area has been designed by the City's Parks and Open Space Landscape Design team.
Work on the project commenced in March this year and is expected to be completed in October 2021.
