The Andrews Labor Government is getting on with works to redevelop a popular pier in Melbourne's west.
Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne today visited Altona Pier to mark the start of construction, which will boost safety and increase access for locals and visitors at the local landmark.
The new pier will include a hardwood timber deck built on top of a durable concrete substructure, as well as handrails, lighting and seating to create more space.
The 310-metre-long pier will also feature a branched pier head to provide better fishing opportunities and multiple places to take in views across the bay.
An accessible low landing will offer people of all abilities the opportunity to access the water while providing new berths for boaters.
The Labor Government is investing $11.9 million for the project, which has been designed and developed in partnership with the Altona community.
The new pier is expected to be open by the end of 2023.
The Labor Government is investing in rebuilds and critical works at piers and jetties across the state, including at Rye, Raymond Island, Lakes Entrance, McLoughlins Beach, Williamstown, Flinders, Mornington and Hampton.
