World Intellectual Property Organization To Visit Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

Visit with Dana-Farber intellectual property experts to include discussions about the state of global innovation, global patent policy, and artificial intelligence innovations

A delegation from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a United Nations agency that helps the world's innovators and creators ensure that their ideas reach the global market and improve lives, will visit Dana-Farber Cancer Institute next week, for a one-day meeting. The WIPO delegation of six intellectual property experts, led by Lisa Jorgenson, WIPO Deputy Director General, will lead discussions and workshops related to international patent policy and will engage with Dana-Farber intellectual property experts and invited patent law professionals from the Boston area and around the world.

"We are delighted to host this special gathering," says Steven Caltrider, Dana-Farber vice president and chief Intellectual Property Counsel. "This visit reflects the excellence of Dana-Farber's research enterprise, the Institute's role as a thought leader in the global innovation ecosystem, and the global reputation of Dana-Farber's intellectual property experts."

WIPO is a nexus for intellectual property policy, processes, and cooperation across its 194 member states. The group is the leading global forum for addressing cutting edge IP issues and offers tools and services that support a global patent filing framework. WIPO's IP data and information guide decision-makers the world over, and their impact-driven projects and technical assistance ensure IP benefits everyone, everywhere.

"Our mission is to get innovation to patients everywhere," says Caltrider. "To do that, we work to obtain intellectual property protection on the innovations that emerge from Dana-Farber laboratories so that they can reach patients at scale. That work involves close collaboration with legal experts around the world, including our colleagues at the World Intellectual Property Organization."

Dana-Farber has grown the intellectual property capabilities of its Office of General Counsel to be world-class in its influence on policy and capabilities to support the growing number of innovations springing from its research labs.

Attendees will include the six-person WIPO delegation; members of Dana-Farber's Office of General Counsel; members of Dana-Farber's Belfer Office of Innovations; external legal counsel that Dana-Farber engages with from Boston, around the U.S. and globally; and intellectual property experts from local academic institutions.

The visit will be sponsored by Fish & Richardson P.C., Barnes & Thornburg, Rouse, Foley Hoag LLP, Elkington & Fife, Mueting Raasch Group, and Lusheng Law Firm.
