Wulguru Water Main Project Gets Investment Flowing

Almost $5 million will be invested into Wulguru over the coming months, with Townsville City Council undertaking a major project to replace more than 1.6km of aging water infrastructure.

Mayor Nick Dametto said the $4.8 million Wulguru Water Main upgrade works would include a new water main constructed along a revised alignment through residential streets, allowing the ageing main along Stuart Dr to be decommissioned once the new infrastructure became operational.

"For more than six decades this infrastructure has served Wulguru well, but like everything – pipes have a lifespan," Cr Dametto said.

"Which is why Council has engaged GNM Group to carry out works during the next six months to replace much of the ageing pipe network with new infrastructure.

"This is not only part of Council's annual water infrastructure maintenance program, but also demonstrates our commitment to getting back to basics and focusing and investing in delivering Council's core services and delivering them well."

Divisional Councillor Brady Ellis said Council was investing heavily in infrastructure works across Wulguru.

"Not only have we got this major water main replacement project happening right now, but at the other side of the suburb we have contractors undertaking the Wulguru wastewater infrastructure resilience program too," Cr Ellis said.

"As part of this project we'll have infrastructure along Hynch St, Grevillea St, Diamantina St, Orpheus St, Georgina St, Gloucester St and Normandy St dug up to construct a new water main alignment, replacing ageing infrastructure with new pipes that have a lifespan of 100 years.

"Our city has an extensive water network, but these works will help ensure areas of Wulguru receive reliable, high-quality drinking water for decades to come and we appreciate the community's patience while our crews are in the suburbs getting the job done."

The Wulguru Water Main upgrade works will be underway until October, weather and conditions permitting. Works may include temporary road closures and vehicle access to properties alongside minor water disruptions.
