Port Phillips Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for the public's help to locate the owners of war medals found in St Kilda on Monday.
An old cardboard box containing war medals was found near the St Kilda Marina on the 18 September about 9am and handed into police.
The two medals are the British and Victory medals awarded to a William Hutchinson, believed to be born in Ballarat in 1895 and left Australia for Cairo, Egypt 1915.
Detectives have made enquiries with RSL, Border Force the National Archives of Australia and established that Hutchinson's next of kin was listed as his father, also William Hutchinson who resided in Coburg, Richmond, Burnley and South Melbourne.
They have not been able to locate William's living next of kin.
Investigators have released images of the medal in the hope someone recognises them and can return them to their rightful owner.
