- Works completed on the $7 million expansion and refurbishment of Uniting WA's Wyn Carr House
- Works add a dedicated 12-unit transitional accommodation facility for women aged 55 and over and refurbished existing heritage buildings
Uniting WA has completed the refurbishment and expansion of Wyn Carr House in Fremantle following a grant from the Cook Labor Government that delivered a new 12-unit transitional accommodation facility for women over 55.
The $7.01 million State Government grant, including $2.06 million from Lotterywest, funded the construction of the dedicated 12-bedroom facility, as well as refurbishments to the existing heritage building.
The self-contained units each contain a private ensuite, with one fully accessible room for women with disability.
Residents will also benefit from shared kitchen and laundry facilities, communal living areas, a computer room, and secure individual food storage.
Refurbishment works will enhance the existing heritage building on site, blending modern accommodation with the preservation of local character.
Wyn Carr House will provide safe, secure and supported accommodation in Fremantle, helping vulnerable older women access stability and the services they need to rebuild their lives.
The project has been delivered as part of the State Government's record $6.3 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures since 2021.
Wyn Carr House will open to tenants in May 2026.
As stated by Homelessness Minister Matthew Swinbourn:
"Wyn Carr House provides safe, supported accommodation for older women at a time when they need it most.
"Older women are one of the fastest-growing groups at risk of homelessness, and this project responds directly to that need.
"This is the kind of targeted, practical support that helps women regain stability and move toward longer-term housing."
As stated by Housing and Works Minister John Carey:
"This $7 million investment from our government will provide more accommodation for older women in the community experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
"We know older women are one of the fastest-growing groups at risk of homelessness, and this project directly responds to that challenge.
"It's part of our record investment in housing and homelessness measures, including the delivery of more short-term and crisis accommodation with access to services and supports."
As stated by Fremantle MLA Simone McGurk:
"This new facility has refurbished an existing heritage building to deliver a new 12-unit transitional accommodation for women aged 55 and over.
"Having safe accommodation and wraparound supports is essential to helping vulnerable older women build a positive future.
"I'm proud to be part of a government delivering for older women experiencing or at risk of homelessness."
