Young people from across Corangamite Shire are invited to the launch of Council's new youth strategy.
It will be launched at Alderwood Manor in Cobden at 11.30 am, Thursday 26 March, with a musical performance by Cooper Lower.
Buses for school students will run to Cobden from Skipton via Lismore, Derrinallum and Camperdown, from Terang and from Timboon.
The Strategy was developed with input from more than 520 young people aged 12–25 across the Shire.
"Throughout 2025, Council heard from young people at 'Breakfast with the Mayor' sessions at Derrinallum, Skipton, Timboon, Terang, Noorat, Camperdown and Cobden, schools," Deputy Mayor Laurie Hickey said.
"More than 100 young people also contributed at the Corangamite Shire Youth Summit. Their feedback has shaped a strategy focused on improving opportunities, services and connection for young people now and into the future."
Cr Hickey said we've heard from our young people and they want better transport options, more recreation choices, social spaces, diverse employment opportunities, stronger education pathways, climate action, improved health services and greater visibility and acceptance.
"This strategy reflects their priorities and sets a clear direction for meaningful action," he said.
The new Youth Strategy outlines actions across five key areas:
Community – Supporting mental health and wellbeing; improving access to health services; increasing social opportunities for teens and young adults; enhancing digital literacy; expanding creative and non‑sport recreation options; and exploring youth spaces.
Economy – Strengthening education, training and employment pathways by increasing access to local career experiences, supporting businesses to engage young people, expanding apprenticeships and traineeships, and offering short courses, mentoring and entrepreneurship programs.
Infrastructure – Reducing transport barriers through flexible transport models, advocating for a reduced licensing age, improving bike and walking paths, and continuing broader advocacy for safer roads.
Environment – Empowering young people as environmental leaders through education programs, volunteer opportunities, nature‑based recreation, and support for community‑led environmental events.
Leadership – Ensuring youth voice informs Council action; celebrating youth achievements; supporting diverse cultural and community engagement; embedding First Peoples stories; and building youth leadership and advocacy skills.
Cr Hickey said the strategy reflects Council's commitment to working alongside young people to build a connected, inclusive and vibrant future for Corangamite.
"This is their strategy, their voices will continue to guide our youth-related priorities, programs and development opportunities."
