Edward River Library celebrated the creative talents of local youth with the announcement of winners in its inaugural youth writing competition, revealed during an assembly at Deniliquin High School on Wednesday.
Held in celebration of Book Week 2025, the competition invited high school students to submit short stories inspired by the theme An Edward River Adventure. The winning entries showcased imagination, storytelling skill, and a deep connection to the local region.
The standout storytellers were:
- Grace Kelly – Year 7/8 Winner
- Harley Benger – Year 7/8 Runner-Up
- Eden Lilford-Hansen – Year 9/10 Winner
- Enzo Sztejman – Year 9/10 Runner-Up
Entries were judged anonymously by a panel including Cr Shirlee Burge, Deniliquin High School Head English Teacher Krista Ladson and Library Coordinator Christine Evola. Stories were assessed on characterisation, plot, theme, setting and atmosphere, writing quality, mechanics and overall passion.
Mayor of Edward River Council, Ashley Hall commended the initiative, saying:
"In today's world where content is often created and consumed at lightning speed, original writing stands out as something truly meaningful. This competition gives young people the chance to slow down, reflect, and craft stories that are entirely their own. It's a powerful way to nurture creativity and develop the writers of the future."
First prize winners received a $250 Shop Local voucher, while runners-up received $50. Excerpts from the winning stories have kindly been published by the Pastoral Times, on the Edward River Council website and Facebook page, and added to Edward River Library's Local History Collection.
Edward River Library extends its congratulations to all participants for their outstanding efforts and for sharing their unique Edward River adventures.
