I love the great outdoors and try and spend as much time outside as I can. It lifts my mood and recharges my batteries.

One of the outdoor activities I like to partake in is overnight and multi day hiking whereby I carry a tent, sleeping bag, air bed, stove, food and clothing all on my back. Recently a hiking buddy of mine and I decided to hike the 10kms to Waanyarra Camping Ground from Dunolly.

The weather was perfect and after a quick lunch at the Dunolly Bakery we set off heading north through the bush. The walking was easy along wide well-maintained tracks. We chatted the whole way and it was only a couple of hours or so before we reached Waanyarra.

We checked out the old cemetery first and then headed for camp where we set up our tents. We missed the sign that said 'day use only' in the middle and unfortunately had our tents set up before we realised that we were supposed to be on the outside. We asked a few of the other campers but nobody minded, so we left the tents where they were.

The site was well kept and there were about a dozen caravans dotted around. There is a stone shelter, drop toilets and a couple of rainwater tanks. We met a few of the other campers, all from out of town and most were prospectors. As a councillor, I love speaking to visitors to get their impressions of our beautiful area we call home. I wasn't disappointed and all that we spoke to held the area in high regards.

After a 'pot wash' it was time for dinner and then a game of Uno cards before retiring to bed. It was a chilly night but I have a super warm down sleeping bag, so I was toasty warm. The next day we had breakfast, packed up and hiked the 10kms back to Dunolly.

It was such a nice overnighter and one I'm keen to do again. We are so blessed to have these great facilities right in our back yard for everyone to enjoy!
