$6 million investment in Northam, Wagin and Gnowangerup's wastewater network

  • 14 kilometres of wastewater pipe to be refurbished in Northam, Wagin and Gnowangerup
  • $6 million investment to extend the life of this essential infrastructure by at least 50 years
  • The McGowan Government, through Water Corporation, will soon start work to refurbish 14 kilometres of wastewater pipes in Northam, Wagin and Gnowangerup, to secure the life of this important infrastructure by at least another 50 years.

Work on the $6 million project will start in Northam, progressing to Wagin and Gnowangerup with the project expected to be finished by late-2020.

The project will use trenchless technology, where practicable, to reline pipes in-situ and help minimise inconvenience to nearby residents by avoiding the need for widespread excavation to access and replace the pipes.

The technology works by inserting a plastic strip liner inside an existing wastewater pipe via access chambers that is then wound down the length of the pipe route. The wound plastic liner is then expanded to fit tightly within the walls of the existing pipe to provide a smooth finish.

Australian company Interflow has been contracted to complete work, with around 12 workers employed locally to complete initial work in Northam.

As stated by Water Minister Dave Kelly:

"Relining wastewater pipes is important as it not only helps prevent corrosion and reduce blockages, but it also helps protect the local wastewater systems and the health of the community and environment.

"I am pleased to see essential wastewater infrastructure in the Great Southern and Goldfields and Agricultural regions future proofed to ensure the safe removal of wastewater for years to come.

"I thank the Northam, Wagin and Gnowangerup communities for their patience while the Water Corporation carries out this essential project."

As stated by Agricultural Region MLC Laurie Graham:

"Infrastructure renewal is vital for regional communities and this investment in Northam, Wagin and Gnowangerup is welcome news.

"These upgrades will provide reliability and peace of mind for years to come.

"I am proud to be part of McGowan Labor Government investing in the future of regional WA."
