ACT Greens release draft bill to freeze rent increases

Australian Greens

ACT Greens Member for Brindabella, Johnathan Davis MLA, has released an exposure draft bill for consultation to freeze rent increases for two years in the ACT and then cap rent increases to 2% thereafter.

"Canberra is one of the most expensive places to rent in the country," Mr Davis said.

"More than 30 percent of Canberrans rent, with many Canberrans in severe rental stress.

"Greens in Government are focused on improving renters rights and addressing the housing crisis.

"Greens Leader Shane Rattenbury recently delivered nation leading renters rights reforms including a ban on no cause evictions, prohibition of solicited rent bidding and minimum energy efficiency standards for rental properties."

"Now, the ACT Greens want to address out of control rent prices, with a two year freeze on rent increases and then a 2 percent cap on rent increases thereafter.

"Addressing the spiralling cost of rent is the best way the ACT can tackle the cost of living crisis for the more than 30 percent of Canberra households that rent.

"Our proposed legislation will also eliminate a loophole that allows existing rent controls to be overridden by tenancy agreements. It will also prevent landlords from hiking rents between tenancies at the same property.

"Because for too long property investors have been prioritised above the needs of renters.

"Our message to Canberra renters is clear - the ACT Greens have your back."
