All I want for Christmas is loving new home

Felines have settled in amongst the fashion and food outlets along Unley Road for a pre-Christmas RSPCA South Australia adoption event aimed at finding loving homes for some of the 115 cats currently available to adopt.

Among cats at the Unley pop-up will be seven-year-old Ken, who arrived in late November at RSPCA SA's vet clinic in need of urgent treatment for infected puncture wounds, believed to have been caused by a dog. He's now recovered and back to his handsome self.

Ten-year-old Angus also arrived at RSPCA's Lonsdale shelter via animal ambulance after being found behind a Darlington supermarket with head and neck injuries. RSPCA SA's spokesperson Carolyn Jones said Angus had proven a favourite among the shelter staff and volunteers due to his extremely affectionate nature.

"Angus is a super-chilled cat who takes everything in his stride," Carolyn said.

"He'll be a great addition to any family and he's at the Unley Road pop-up now waiting to steal someone's heart."

The pop-up event running until Monday is located at 144 Unley Road, Unley. The retail outlet will be transformed into RSPCA SA's 15th op shop, opening in February next year.

"We're using this space over the next four days to make some of our cats available to people who might not be able to travel to our Lonsdale shelter," Carolyn said.

"We're especially keen to see our older cats like Ken and Angus find homes because they struggle for attention when there are kittens available, yet are every bit as adorable."

A pair of bonded Birmans also made the trip from the Lonsdale shelter to Unley yesterday. Theo and Bess came into RSPCA SA care in October, part of a large intake of cats that were living in squalor. Other cats available at the Unley pop-up have been surrendered by their owners for a range of reasons, including five-year-old Squirrel, whose owner sadly had to give her up due to ill health.

"It's a very tough decision for most people to surrender an animal, and our job is to take good care of them until they can find their next home," Carolyn said.

"Giving animals second chances at life is what we do, but we need our community's support – hopefully we'll see lots of people at this weekend's pop-up, meeting these beautiful cats."

All cats are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and health-checked, and available to adopt from just $39.
