The Surf Coast Shire Council is looking for emerging community leaders to take part in its 2021 Casuarina Community Leadership Program.

The annual program, which has been running for several years, provides participants with the opportunity to develop leadership skills and progress change in their community.

With a focus on hands-on learning, the program teaches practical skills such as project management, effective communication and engagement and provides advice on how to apply for grants.

The program consists of 13 sessions run between February and June 2021 and there is no cost to take part. There are only 30 spaces available in the program. Applications are now open and close 12 November.

Council is holding an online information session about the program – via Zoom - at 7pm on Thursday 29 October.

Past participant Vera Fagone, who runs Little Feast restaurant in Aireys Inlet, encouraged people to apply.

"It was something I really needed to do. The program was truly inspiring and gave me the confidence to have a go. I completed the program in 2016 and I still refer to my notes now. I'd encourage anyone thinking about doing 'something more' to apply," she said.

Surf Coast Shire General Manager Culture and Community Chris Pike said the program aimed to empower community members to use their unique knowledge, skills, care and connections to create positive changes.

"We are lucky to have so many passionate locals who have a deep understanding of their community and its needs. This program equips our budding leaders with the practical skills to realise their community project ideas."

"We'd love to see a wide range of communities represented and an equally broad range of project ideas covering topics from sustainability to social connection."
