ARC Research Hub to help reduce carbon emissions

Today, Australian Research Council (ARC) Deputy Chief Executive Officer Dr Richard Johnson attended the official launch of the ARC Research Hub for Carbon Utilisation and Recycling.

Led by Monash University, the ARC Research Hub aims to develop technologies to transform carbon dioxide emissions from the energy and manufacturing sectors into valuable products and create pathways to market to drive industry transformation.

Dr Johnson emphasised the highly innovative approach taken by the hub to drive and connect cutting edge basic and applied research to some of the fundamental areas of abatement.

"The ARC is pleased to be able to support this project, which involves strong collaboration among Australian and international universities, together with significant buy-in from industry partners," he said.

"The research outcomes of this ARC Research Hub will benefit industry partners in National Reconstruction Fund priority areas - including renewables and low emissions technology - and will contribute to global efforts to combat climate change and transition towards a sustainable, low-carbon economy.

"With a total of 18 research projects, it is anticipated that the ARC Research Hub will develop a comprehensive framework to support the trade of embedded carbon products," Dr Johnson said.

The Research Hub is expected to attract 18 students, 23 researchers, 5 research fellows, and 4 research assistants.

The ARC is investing $5 million over 5 years under the ARC Industrial Transformation Research Program, with the Research Hub receiving a further $6.5 million from Monash University and partners including 7 national and international universities and 17 industry partners.
