A new Research Training Centre will develop data science skills and tools and provide post-doctoral training for the next generation of data analysts for natural resources.
Australian Research Council (ARC) Chief Executive Officer, Professor Sue Thomas, has welcomed the launch of the ARC Training Centre in Data Analytics for Resources and Environments (DARE), officially opened today at The University of Sydney. The Training Centre is receiving $3.9 million in funding from the ARC over five years to deliver data analytics skills and tools to aid Australia's resource industries in making the best possible evidence-based decisions for our natural resources.
Professor Thomas said the Training Centre, funded under the ARC's Industrial Transformation Training Centres scheme, fosters close partnerships between researchers and end-users to provide innovative Higher Degree by Research and postdoctoral training for industries that are vital to Australia's future.
"ARC Training Centres play an important role in creating a place where researchers can collaborate with industry partners and participate in graduate level training in Industrial Transformation Priority areas," said Professor Thomas.
"DARE will work to strengthen the capabilities of industries and end-users in natural resource management by training researchers in data science and providing the tools and expertise to utilise the information in a meaningful way."
DARE researchers will work closely with The University of New South Wales and The University of Western Australia - collaborating with The Western Australian Biodiversity Science Institute; Geoscience Australia; IAG Insurance; McKinsey & Company; Natural Resources Commission; Newcrest Mining Limited; NSW Treasury; Office of Environment and Heritage NSW; Water NSW; The Alan Turing Institute; The Trustee for The Minderoo Foundation Trust; and the University of Leeds, UK.
