Assault of an inmate at Nova Institution for Women

On December 5, 2020, at approximately 1:30 p.m., an inmate was found to have been the victim of an assault at Nova Institution for Women, a multi-level security federal institution. The injured inmate was evaluated by staff members and transported to an outside hospital to receive treatment.

Truro Police Services and the institution are presently investigating the incident.

No staff members or other inmates were injured during this incident.

The assailant has been identified and the appropriate actions have been taken.

The Warden had ordered a lockdown of the institution and an exceptional search of one of the living units. The lockdown has since ended and the institution is currently on modified routine. Regularly scheduled visits are cancelled for December 7, 2020. Normal operations will resume when it is considered safe to do so.

The safety and security of institutions, their staff and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will investigate the circumstances of this incident and continue to work with the police.
