The Territories Stolen Generations Redress Scheme continues to deliver support to Stolen Generations survivors, with close to 900 applications received and 417 payments made since the Scheme opened one year ago today.
The $378 million Scheme seeks to recognise the harm and trauma experienced by Stolen Generations survivors removed as children from their families or communities in the Northern Territory, the Australian Capital Territory, or the Jervis Bay Territory, prior to their respective self-Government.
Since it's commencement on 1 March 2022, $33.5 million has been paid to successful applicants who are offered a redress payment of up to $75,000, a healing assistance payment of $7,000 and, should they wish, a Personal Acknowledgement.
A Personal Acknowledgement gives survivors the choice to tell their story about removal and the impact it has had on their life, and then receive a personalised acknowledgement from a senior government official.
So far, 83% of eligible applicants have indicated they would like to receive a Personal Acknowledgement when they are ready. Some survivors have now commenced work with the Scheme to plan their Personal Acknowledgement.
It is important to continue momentum and awareness of the Scheme and its services while applications are open until 28 February 2026.
Free, independent and confidential support services are available to help potential applicants before, during and after they apply- with access to services available for those even just thinking about applying.
This includes free and independent legal advice, to ensure applicants are fully informed and can make a decision that best suits their personal situation.
Family members can also submit an application on behalf of Stolen Generations members who passed away on or after the Scheme was announced on 5 August 2021.
