Astral Systems, founded in 2021 by University of Bristol Research Associate Dr Tom Wallace-Smith and chief executive Talmon Firestone, has closed a Series A funding round led by Mercia Ventures, alongside prominent investors including Tees River, Daphni, and Blast Club, with continued support from Speedinvest and Playfair Capital.
The investment marks a major milestone for the Bristol-region deep tech firm and highlights how University of Bristol research and collaboration are helping to drive innovation with real-world impact.
Firestone said: "We are rewriting how we approach fusion and, in doing so, redefining what it means to be a fusion company. This is evident in our novel technology and its near-term applications in modern medicine, as well as facilitating the search for hybrid energy. With this new funding, we can accelerate our ambition of building a profitable, impactful fusion business, and build on the momentum of the past 12 months with the backing of our investors."
Astral Systems is developing a novel multi-state fusion (MSF) technology – a new class of compact nuclear fusion reactor with immediate applications in producing medical radioisotopes.
These isotopes are critical for modern healthcare, used both in imaging to diagnose diseases such as cancer and in targeted radiotherapy to treat tumours.
Astral's technology enables smaller, more flexible production facilities that could be located closer to hospitals – improving access, reducing costs and helping to secure long-term supply.
The company, which plans to expand its team from 23 to more than 40 employees by 2026, has already demonstrated significant progress, generating more than £3million in revenue from research contracts and operating multiple commercial fusion facilities.
Lee Lindley of Mercia Ventures said: "We're incredibly proud to have led this investment into Astral Systems are excited about working with Talmon and Tom. Astral's technology has the potential to transform the manufacturing and supply of medical isotopes, which are vitally important for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Astral Systems is a perfect example of the bold ideas that Mercia likes to back."
Astral Systems' latest successful funding round reinforces the Bristol region's position as a leading hub for deep-tech innovation.
By combining cutting-edge academic research, entrepreneurial leadership and strong industry partnerships, the company is demonstrating how ideas developed through University of Bristol connections can translate into technologies with the potential to improve healthcare outcomes worldwide.
