Bipartisan approach to climate and energy welcome

Business Council of Australia

We welcome today's announcement from Labor leader Anthony Albanese that he will work to develop a bipartisan framework to reduce emissions, Business Council chief executive Jennifer Westacott said.

"We cannot afford to waste the unprecedented co-operation we have achieved throughout the COVID-19 crisis, on every issue we'll need to work together to solve problems and create the new jobs that will drive our recovery.

"We have long called for a bipartisan, national climate and energy framework that is scalable and provides business with the confidence they need to drive new investment, create new jobs and accelerate our transition to net-zero emissions.

"The Business Council remains committed to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. To supply clean, affordable, reliable and secure energy businesses need a mechanism that plots the pathway across the whole economy.

"We look forward to working with the government, the opposition and our members to discuss a bipartisan framework to driving down emissions and ending the last decade of dysfunctional energy politics in Australia."
