A case of bird flu has been confirmed in Hobsons Bay.

The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action confirmed with Council there has been a positive detection of a bird with the H5 bird flu in the municipality.

Bird flu has recently been detected across Victoria, with this marking the first case in Hobsons Bay.

H5 is a highly contagious strain of bird flu which has affected millions of birds and thousands of mammals overseas.

Community members who find sick or dead birds should report it online at agriculture.vic.gov.au/birdflu or to the 24-hour emergency animal disease hotline on 1800 675 888.

They are also reminded to avoid contact with sick or dead wild birds or wildlife and record what they see.

Bird flu can also affect domestic animals. Pet owners should keep dogs on a lead in areas with native wildlife, not allow pets to investigate or eat dead animals and stop cats from roaming and hunting wildlife.

Chicken and bird owners can also take precautions, including keeping feed and water away from wild birds, preventing contact with wild birds or their droppings, and keeping cages, yards and enclosures clean.
