Older Western Australians have more time to decide on their future care and living arrangements, thanks to our new Time to Think initiative.
Time to Think provides dedicated beds in selected aged care homes for older patients who are ready to leave hospital but need:
- extra time to consider their long-term care options
- to wait for a permanent bed to become available in an aged care home.
These patients get the same standard of care as other aged care residents, along with ongoing support to secure long-term care options.
The initiative helps ease pressure on hospitals, keeping inpatient beds available for those who need them most, while giving older people a comfortable, supportive space to plan what's next.
Beds are located at the below aged care homes:
Aged care home | Location | Bed allocation |
---|---|---|
Amana Living's Mosman Park Care Centre | Mosman Park | 10 |
Amana Living's The Beach House | Kinross | 14 |
Hall and Prior's Leighton Aged Care Home | West Perth | 9 |
Hall and Prior's Hamersley Aged Care Home | Subiaco | 9 |
The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve the way people transition from hospital to aged care. Other key programs include:
- Transition Care Program – supports older adults after a hospital stay with up to 12 weeks of restorative care.
- From Hospital to Home (FH2H) – supports people with disabilities who are medically fit to leave hospital but are waiting for long-term support
- Residential Respite Pilot – supports older adults with a short-term stay in an aged care home while making long-term care decisions, includes providers in regional locations.
Together, these initiatives aim to ensure older Western Australians receive the right care in the right setting – while freeing up hospital beds for those who need them most.
