Carlton's Rich History Comes Alive: Bayside

Carlton's rich history came alive for a one-day festival of fun when Bayside Council presented Stories on Parade on Sunday 17 May.

From striking art deco architecture and treasured neighbourhood cafés to handmade fashion, artisan markets and global delicacies, this vibrant celebration allowed visitors to experience the hidden charm and creative spirit of Carlton.

Stories on Parade, presented by Bayside Council in partnership with local businesses and cultural institutions, transformed Carlton into a lively hub of heritage, culture and community connection.

The event coincided with the opening of Sydney Writers' Festival and featured a special author talk on Miles Franklin at Shopfront Arts Co-op.

Miles Franklin, best known for her iconic novel My Brilliant Career, once lived in Carlton, and Council unveiled interpretive signage celebrating her life, literary legacy and local connection as part of the festivities.

Visitors enjoyed a packed program of attractions including self-guided historical displays, bustling market stalls, guided heritage walking tours, family-friendly entertainment, a petting zoo and performances by talented local artists.

This exciting initiative was proudly funded through the NSW Government's Community Improvement District Pilot Program led by Transport for NSW.

Bayside Mayor Edward McDougall said:

"This successful event has raised the profile of Carlton as a growing vibrant arts hub that is helping to strengthen our identity as a liveable, creative city," Bayside Mayor Edward McDougall said.
