CCTV released over glassing at Haymarket restaurant

Police have released CCTV footage as investigations continue into an assault in Haymarket last month, which resulted in a man needing 14 stiches to a head wound.

About 9.15pm on Thursday 27 February 2020, a 23-year-old man was sitting with a friend in a restaurant in Thomas Street, when he was approached from behind by another man.

Police have been told this man struck him in the back of the head with a glass bottle before he snatched the 23-year-old man's spectacles and threw them back into his face.

The injured man was taken to St Vincent's Hospital where he required 14 stitches to close a head injury.

Officers from Sydney City Police Area Command established a crime scene and commenced an investigation.

As part of their inquiries, officers have released CCTV vision of a man who may be able to assist with the investigation.

He has been described as being of Asian appearance, about 175cm-180cm tall, of a medium build, aged in his 30s, and with black short hair. The man is depicted in the vision wearing a black shirt and black pants.

Sydney City Police Area Command Crime Manager, Detective Inspector David El-Badawi, urged the public to look closely the vision.

"Our detectives are very keen to speak with this man or anyone who can help us with this investigation," Det Insp El-Badawi said.

"From all accounts, this was an unprovoked and cowardly assault and an action that we will simply not tolerate.

"We need the community's assistance to help us piece together the circumstances surrounding this incident and ensure we take the appropriate action," Det Insp El-Badawi said.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence.
