City invites input into Sparrow Park renewal

Sparrow Park is being renewed and the City of Greater Geelong is inviting residents to have their say on the proposed plans.

A valued and historic play space, the Park is just one of 380 public play spaces managed and maintained by the City of Greater Geelong.

Located in the centre of Geelong West, Sparrow Park has long served the region's families with numerous play opportunities for all age groups.

Sparrow Park has ample open space for a range of recreational activities including an extensive playground with shade sails, junior skate/scooter area, basketball and netball facilities.

It also has a large lawn area with rugby posts, alongside quality social and picnic facilities including a rotunda, BBQ's, toilets and walking paths.

In addition to renewing Sparrow Park the City will partner with Rotary International to dismantle the current equipment and reassemble it overseas for other children to enjoy.

The proposed plans would see the current playground equipment replaced with new equipment, a seat installed, and trees planted for shade.

In addition, the proposal would see the surface around the play equipment remain as soft fall, meaning the presence of playground-safe tan bark.

It's intended that Sparrow Park will remain a District playground, providing a range of play opportunities and amenities, catering for all ages and abilities.

Renewal does not include any additional fixed shade structures, water play, an increase in playground size or change of playground hierarchy.

Along with on-site signage outlining the proposed plans, an opportunity for face-to-face engagement is also being provided:

  • Wednesday 22 March at 8:00am – on site at Sparrow Park
  • Sunday 26 March at 9:00am – on site at Sparrow Park

Additionally, residents can contribute to the conversation.

The engagement has opened and will be taking feedback until Sunday 26 March 2023.

Mayor Trent Sullivan

I am looking to the renewal of Sparrow Park and encourage residents to share their views on the proposed plans.

The intended Sparrow Park renewal is an important step in providing for the recreational needs of families in the community.

Responding to the survey questions will help the City to understand community views on the proposed playground renewal plans.

Councillor Peter Murrihy - Chair of the Leisure and Recreation portfolio

I urge residents to complete a short survey and have their say on the proposed plans.

The intended Sparrow Park renewal is an important step in providing for the recreational needs of families in the community.

We understand the importance of providing play spaces that are easily accessible to residents, and including equipment that is both entertaining and testing, while maintaining high and safe Australian standards.

I urge residents to have their say on the Sparrow Park renewal and redesign, and help the City understand how it can best meet the needs of community members in Geelong West.
