Two climbers and their rescuers expect to be winched to safety this morning after one was injured while climbing Crater Bluff near Coonabarabran yesterday.
The men were 150m up Cornerstone Rib in the Warrumbungles about 1pm (Saturday 9 May 2026), when one was hit in the head by a falling rock.
The 61-year-old man suffered cuts and a suspected concussion.
He and his climbing partner managed to reach a ledge and activated an EPIRB.
A multi-agency emergency operation was initiated with officers from Blue Mountains Police Rescue and two Critical Care Paramedics being winched to the top of the Bluff by PolAir.
Shortly after midnight, both climbers were brought to the top of the Bluff where they were treated.
Climbers and rescuers have remained in-situ and it's planned all will be winched out about 6am (Sunday 10 May 2026), to the command post in the National Park.
It's understood the climbers are from Victoria.
