Colourful Hume

Council is working towards creating a more vibrant city in the activation of public places by undertaking a placemaking mural program. The mural program has been undertaken with the aim of using public art in shopping precincts to provide economic benefits and advance a strong sense of community ownership, wellbeing, and safety.

Hume's most recent mural project 'Dallas Tiles' at 1 Dobell Pl, Dallas was completed in early August by talented artist Mete Erdogan.

The design blends tradition with local history and a vibrant streetscape. From a distance the image looks like traditional Turkish tiling. Up close the symbols and pattern represent locally relevant stories: a suitcase speaks to the rich migration history of Dallas, figs and lemons are an ode to the gardens of Mediterranean families and their culinary cultural heritage, a work-boot recalls the Broadmeadows Yakka factory and it's industrial history of the area, and a shadow profile of his mother is both a personal dedication and also a celebration of the resilience and brilliance of all women in the community.

Large outdoor artworks including murals offer artists various opportunities to engage with the local community – at the site itself and through design development workshops, in schools or community groups.

There are currently four murals across Westmeadows, Sunbury and Dallas.

Council has allocated $120,000 to fund additional murals so you can expect to see more colourful artwork at a range of sites over the next 12 months.
