Central Goldfields Shire Council is preparing to have a community conversation about a proposal for Talbot that has been mooted for a long time.
The Talbot Futures project, including a sewerage scheme for the township, has been identified as having many benefits, and it's featured in Council's Advocacy document for the upcoming State Election.
Central Goldfields Shire Chief Executive Officer Peter Harriott said detailed design and project costing would have to be funded as an initial step, however it's estimated that $40 million would be required from the State and Federal Governments to deliver the work.
Mr Harriott said providing sewerage infrastructure would ensure the safety and health of Talbot residents and deliver much-needed population and economic growth.
"Talbot is well placed to accommodate regional growth to help achieve the state's housing targets, and to take advantage of economic opportunities, but is currently constrained by a lack of wastewater infrastructure," he said.
"Talbot is strategically located between Maryborough and Ballarat, with an upgraded train station, a renowned farmers' market and intact goldrush heritage.
"Funding the installation of a modern sewerage system will enable growth while improving the quality of life for existing residents and enable local businesses to expand in servicing a growing population."
The Talbot Futures project is one of Council's advocacy priorities for the 2026 Victorian Election.
