Community urged to lace up for Long Run this September

Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia is calling on the community to lace up for The Long Run and run, walk or wheel 72km this September to show their support to men and families impacted by the disease.

The Long Run coincides with Prostate Cancer Awareness Month (September).

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in Australian men, claiming more than 3,000 lives a year, and leaving men and their families with lifelong impacts.

PCFA CEO Professor Jeff Dunn AO challenged locals to take action and support the men they love by getting involved.

"Many families in the local community are facing prostate cancer and will need special care and support," he said.

"With your help, we can raise vital funds so that men in the local area have access to life-saving clinical trials and Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurses.

"One man is diagnosed with prostate cancer in Australia every 30 minutes, yet too many men still go through it alone.

"A staggering 72 per cent of men won't reach out for support for their diagnosis, with anxiety and depression common among those diagnosed.

"Without community involvement in Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and The Long Run, we simply will not be able to meet the growing demand for PCFA services and programs.

"We would love to see the community come together for The Long Run and help make a difference.

"Not only will your involvement benefit the ones you love, it will also improve your own health and wellbeing."

More than 3,000 people are expected to join The Long Run campaign this year in the hope of raising $1.6 million for prostate cancer research and specialist nurses.
