City of Darwin has released the outcomes of its community consultation on the future Civic Centre Community Plaza, revealing strong community support for a green, shaded and welcoming public space that celebrates Darwin's unique tropical lifestyle and cultural identity.
The six-week consultation, conducted between 20 July and 28 August 2026, attracted almost 5,900 direct feedback contributions and interactions, providing valuable insights into how the community would like to see the space transformed.
The engagement included 535 completed surveys, 2,135 votes and written ideas through the interactive Plaza Puzzle display, 337 participants at community information stalls and feedback from key stakeholders.
Lord Mayor Peter Styles said the response demonstrated the community's enthusiasm for helping shape the future of Darwin's civic heart.
"This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a public space that truly reflects the people of Darwin, and it's encouraging to see so many residents getting involved and sharing their ideas," Lord Mayor Styles said.
"What we've heard is that people want a cool, green and welcoming space where they can gather, relax, connect and enjoy everything that makes Darwin special.
"Shade, accessibility and safety have come through as clear priorities, alongside a strong desire to celebrate our city's rich history, multicultural identity and connection to Larrakia Country.
"This feedback gives us a valuable foundation as we move towards the next stage of planning and design."
The consultation identified seven key themes that will help guide the future plaza's development:
- Natural and shaded areas: Creating a green, tropical environment with shade, cooling and protection for Galamarrma, the Tree of Knowledge.
- Accessibility and inclusivity: Ensuring the plaza is welcoming and accessible to people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.
- Safety and security: Incorporating design features that promote a safe and comfortable environment for everyone.
- Culture and heritage: Celebrating Darwin's multicultural identity, the history of the Civic Centre site and its connection to the Chinese community, and the cultural significance of Galamarrma to the Larrakia people.
- Activation and amenity: Providing opportunities for community events, markets, performances and cultural celebrations.
- A space for everyone: Creating a versatile public space that caters to families, children, young people and the broader community.
- Parking and connectivity: Considering convenient access and suitable parking options, including accessible parking.
The Civic Centre Community Plaza will be developed on the site of the existing Civic Centre building on Harry Chan Avenue, following the completion of the new Civic Centre in 2028.
The project will return this prominent city-centre space to the community, strengthening connections between Civic Park, Cavenagh Street and the broader Darwin CBD.
City of Darwin will now consider the consultation findings as planning progresses towards development of a concept design for the plaza.
The community will be kept informed of project milestones, with further engagement opportunities anticipated as the design develops.
The Civic Centre Community Plaza Engagement Outcomes Summary Report is available through Engage Darwin.
Once complete, the new Civic Centre will feature a modern community hub with an enhanced library, customer service centre, City of Darwin offices, function and meeting spaces, public parking, and a vibrant green plaza.
