The future of Islam in an increasingly polarised world will be the focus of a conference to be held at The University of Western Australia this month.
Hosted by UWA's Centre for Muslim States and Societies, the conference draws attention to the roles of Islam in current and future global politics, with its shifting power relations and turbulences.
Professor Samina Yasmeen, Director of UWA's Centre for Muslim States and Societies, said the conference would explore the multiple forms of cultural, political and religious differences locally and globally and their significance for Islam and Muslims in both Muslim majority and Muslim minority contexts.
"We have prominent speakers lined up for this conference, who will be presenting on some of the key defining issues of our times," Professor Yasmeen said.
Conference convenors Professor Yasmeen and Research Fellow Dr Azim Zahir, from UWA's School of Social Sciences, are experts in international relations, Asian studies and politics with a focus on the role of religion.
About 30 national and international speakers will discuss polarisation in the context of Islam and global politics, domestic implication, ideological and discursive trends, social media, emerging Muslim youth cultures and Muslim minorities.
"The unfolding conflict in Israel and Palestine has only increased the importance of this conference," Dr Zahir said.
The fourth Annual Conference of the Australian Institute for Islamic and Muslim Studies will be held from 9am on Tuesday 21 November until 8pm on Wednesday 22 November at The University Club of Western Australia. For more information and tickets click here.
