As part of the 2026-27 State Budget, the Cook Labor Government is allocating $28.2 million from the Digital Capability Fund to deliver a digital driver's licence and State Digital Identity.
The digital credentials will be available in the ServiceWA digital wallet, providing a secure way to carry and present a licence, giving Western Australians greater control over personal information by sharing only what's needed, such as proof of age or licence status.
Digital credentials increase convenience, reduce paperwork, can be issued and replaced quicker and reduce the need to attend physical service centres.
The ability to verify credentials in near real-time will ensure information is current and accurate, increasing safeguards for children, vulnerable people and the broader community.
As part of the work, there will also be upgrades to the WA Relationship Authorisation Manager, which will improve the ways businesses will be able to interact with Government.
A State Digital Identity will allow more Western Australians to have greater access to online services and secure transactions in the future.
This is part of the Cook Labor Government's commitment to deliver easy-to-use, smart and secure services that improve safety and efficiency for Western Australians.
Comments attributed to Science and Innovation Minister Stephen Dawson:
"These changes are designed around how people live and work today. Having key credentials available digitally means less paperwork, fewer delays, and greater convenience for individuals, employers and organisations who rely on them every day.
"By providing these services digitally we are making them easier for people to access whilst lowering the chances of theft and fraud.
"This funding reflects the Cook Labor Government's commitment to modernising services in a way that is responsible, inclusive and future-focused."
As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"We know most Western Australians carry their phone every day, so we're making it easier to carry your driver's licence with you too.
"It's another measure to make life easier for Western Australians and builds on our recent SmartRider upgrades that allow passengers to tag on and off with their phones.
"It is all part of our commitment to delivering smarter services that support a more efficient economy and a better experience for the community."
As stated by Minister Assisting the Transport Minister Jessica Stojkovski:
"The Cook Labor Government is pleased to be introducing digital driver's licences and digital identity platforms, to provide modern, convenient and safe identification options for Western Australians.
"The introduction of these digital capabilities will improve Western Australians' access to transport and other government services.
"It will ensure security, efficiency and inclusiveness of the identification process and deliver digital infrastructure that will enable ongoing benefits for WA into the future."
