Every month since 2001, as a full moon ascends above the waters of Townsville, the familiar sound of the Full Moon Drum Circle takes over The Strand's Gregory Street Amphitheatre.
The outdoor cultural event is a chance for people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in a collective drumming experience, led by facilitator Alex Salvador. The musical event has been running monthly since 2001 and has been recognised as the longest-running council-funded drum circle in Australia – and thanks to a contract renewal from Townsville City Council, the Full Moon Drum Circle will continue to be free for residents and visitors to enjoy.
The renewed contract worth about $19,000 annually was awarded in August following discussion at Ordinary Council in July.
Mr Salvador said it was great to see Council throw its support behind the Full Moon Drum Circle for another two years.
"It's more than just the drumming, it's primarily about community and about people connecting with their friends, their family and the people around them. Many people make lifelong friendships through these events," Mr Salvador said.
"In the circle everyone is equal, everyone can join in and everyone can contribute to the rhythm that is created by the group. That is the magic of it.
"Council supports community development in a big way. The council has been supporting this since mid-2004 – it is the only council in the whole of Australia that has supported a drum circle for this long.
"I'm really grateful for the Townsville community because without them this event wouldn't have continued for so long."
Mayor Nick Dametto said events like the Full Moon Drum Circle helped make Townsville a more vibrant and exciting place to live.
"There's no better place to spend a balmy evening in Townsville than on The Strand, and the Full Moon Drum Circle has become a much-loved part of our city's events calendar," Cr Dametto said.
"It brings together people from all walks of life in one of Townsville's most iconic locations, creating a great atmosphere and strengthening community connections.
"Council is proud to renew its partnership with The Rhythm Connection, allowing Alex to continue delivering this iconic event for our community.
"The benefits also flow through to nearby businesses, with more people out and about on The Strand on drum circle nights.
"It's a great example of how community events can bring people together, support local businesses and add to what makes Townsville such a great place to live."
