A 15-member delegation from the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe will carry out an election observation mission from 13 to 17 May, to observe the local elections taking place on 16 May 2026 in Iceland. On election day, seven teams will be deployed throughout the country to observe the election procedures in polling stations.
The delegation will meet with representatives of the Ministry of Infrastructure, members of the national delegation of Iceland to the Congress, the National Electoral Commission, and the diplomatic corps of countries represented in the Congress delegation. It will also hold panel discussions with representatives of NGOs, civil society and the media. Additionally, the delegation will hold briefings with representatives and candidates of political parties running in these elections.
A statement of preliminary conclusions will be released on the Congress website on Sunday 17 May 2026 in the afternoon.
