Across Australia, Legacy Week has just been conducted wherein the public are encouraged to purchase a badge to support their important work.

Founded in 1923, Legacy made a promise to help the families of veterans carry on with their lives after the loss of loved ones during WW1. The vision was that no dependent would suffer financial or social disadvantage - this promise survives to this day where partners and children of veterans are supported by Legacy, most being over 75.

The first club began in Melbourne closely followed by Ballarat Club #3. In 1961 the Maryborough-St Arnaud Group commenced sponsored by Ballarat Legacy. There are 44 clubs throughout Australia and one in London, supporting 43,000 individuals. Locally the Ballarat Group has 90 legatees caring for 500 dependents.

2023 is special for Legacy as it celebrates its centenary. This important milestone is being marked by a torch relay that began on Anzac Day at Pozieres, France, passing through London, travelling throughout Australia and finishing in Melbourne in October.

In Maryborough we have a Laurel Club made up of the wives or partners of war veterans. For decades this group of dedicated women has actively supported the work of Legacy through fundraising and community work. Recently the Laurel ladies have ceased many of their activities, but still get together regularly for lunch and companionship. Many of these women are in their 80's and 90's, and to witness their vitality and love of life is quite inspirational.
