Cool kids.
How fantastic to see a short video of the Dunolly Primary School 3/4 kids recently, with the Cool Spaces logo competition!
Cool Spaces are areas where people who don't have air conditioning at home can find relief from hot weather. Council is looking to brand Cool Spaces across Central Goldfields Shire with a simple, eye-catching logo. So, we asked primary and secondary school aged students in our Shire to create one.
Dunolly Primary School Year 3/4s enthusiastically embraced the task, following an education session about the harm that persistent hot weather can cause to our most vulnerable residents, family and pets.
The competition closed last week, with a whopping 200 hand drawn and/or digitally created entries received!
Hot weather is no joke, with its main killer - heatstroke, a severe heat-related illness where the body's core temperature rises to dangerous levels, damaging vital organs.
The high temperatures also aggravate pre-existing conditions like heart, lung, and kidney disease, increasing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and renal failure. Additionally, heat stress can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, as well as disorientation and worsened mental health issues.
So, in hot weather, find cool spaces like air-conditioned libraries, shopping centres, the Dunolly outdoor pool, community halls or council buildings to escape high temperatures. These venues will provide safe, cool environments, especially for vulnerable people such as the elderly or infants. And if you happen to live next door to elderly residents – be a swell neighbour and check in on them to make sure they're ok.
Good luck to all the entries, I can't wait to see the winning logo.
