Creativity Shines Bright For Christmas In Geelong

Christmas and creativity go hand-in-hand in Geelong this festive season.

Our Christmas in Geelong program features the colour and imagination of local artists in outdoor installations across the city until 7 January.

City Hall projections

A playful take on contemporary celebration is lighting up City Hall from dusk to midnight.

Inspired by the tradition of giving, the projections are the brilliant work of multimedia artist Georgia Pinn with contributions from Ian De Gruchy and Olaf Meyer of Multimedia Events.

"City Hall is imagined as a gift, with each animated wrapping paper inspired by the visual languages of Geelong's diverse cultural communities," Ms Pinn said.

"This piece redefines the festive season as a time of cultural convergence, generosity, and shared humanity."

School Christmas trees

A festive forest of 29 Christmas tree cut-outs decorated by local schools is standing tall in the forecourt of Johnstone Park.

Fyans Park Primary School art teacher Jacqui McLean said her students took the opportunity to celebrate the school's 60-year anniversary by highlighting key moments from the past six decades on their tree.

"From the moon landing to colour TV, our students put so much effort into marking our school's special milestone in a fun, festive way," Mrs McLean said.

Selfie wall

Geelong artist Vicki Clissold has captured summery vibes on the waterfront in her mural 'Catch this'.

Commissioned by the National Wool Museum, the artwork creates a selfie wall at the entrance of the Carousel.

"It's my impression of all the colour, characters and joy at our fantastic foreshore over Christmas," Mrs Clissold said.

Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM said the Christmas in Geelong program offered many ways to embrace the season.

"Whether you're seeking the bright lights and high-energy of our Floating Christmas Tree, or prefer quieter moments appreciating our outdoor activations, there is something for everyone to enjoy," Mayor Kontelj said.

"Christmas in Geelong is about bringing people together at the most wonderful time of the year."

Meanwhile, our Christmas Performance Trail kicks off tomorrow, with musical and street artists popping up around central Geelong each Friday, Saturday and Sunday until 14 December. Locations and times are on our website.

The Windows of the World gallery partnership with Cultura also opens on Wednesday 3 December on Yarra Street.
