Post-Doctoral Research Fellow receives award from Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing
Ijeoma Julie Eche, PhD, FNP-BC, AOCNP, CPHON, BMT-CN, a post-doctoral research fellow in the Phyllis F. Cantor Center for Research in Nursing and Patient Care Services at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, has been awarded the 2020 Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing Writing Award.
The recipient of this award is selected by the Editorial Board of the Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing (JOPON). Eche was recognized for her manuscript focusing on the racial disparities in survival outcomes between Black and white children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). The literature review's findings suggested that in children with ALL, Black children had poorer survival outcomes in comparison to white children, particularly adolescents.
Eche joined Dana-Farber in September of 2019, having received her PhD and Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Massachusetts Boston College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Her research focuses on improving psychosocial outcomes in minoritized pediatric oncology families. Eche says that receiving this award "is wonderful because it not only informs this program of research, but it also brings attention to disparities in cancer care and cancer outcomes that still exist."
Eche was recognized during the Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) Virtual Experience 2020. This is an on-demand event through December 31, where experts in pediatric hematology/oncology nursing network and hear of the latest research and advancements in the field.
The JOPON Writing Award has been awarded since 1994 and has been supported by Sage Publications since 2003. The award is given annually to a single candidate, who first authors a manuscript that is accepted and published in the journal in the past year and has had three or more manuscripts published previously. Eche is the 25th annual recipient of the award.
