Kiama Council at our June Ordinary Meeting adopted Council's first Dog Friendly Spaces Strategy.
This Strategy provides a strategic approach to the future provision of our dog friendly spaces throughout our Municipality.
Council developed the strategy in consultation with the community, with more than 500 responses to an initial survey in our co-design phase. We also received a great response to the draft strategy, with more than 40 formal submissions and numerous conversations and interactions at our Community Pop-ups.
The strategy defines dog friendly spaces, lists our current off-leash and dog friendly spaces and outlines how Council balances the needs of dog owners and open space users
The actions outlined in the Draft Dog Friendly Spaces Strategy range from an internal audit of signage to the creation of a new fenced dog off leash area in Jamberoo (see below).

Jamberoo dog park update
Work is progressing on Council's new fenced off-leash area for dogs in Jamberoo, which is one of the action items noted in the Dog Friendly Spaces Strategy.
After listening to community feedback, consulting with experts and our funding body, the Jamberoo fenced off-leash area (FOLA) will move ahead with the following improvements:
- The entire FOLA will now be expanded to two sections of 35sq m and 22sq m respectively (originally scoped for one area of 30 sq m)
- The two sections will comprise: one for large dogs (15kg+) and one for smaller dogs (under 15kg)
- A concrete footpath will be installed to link the existing footpath to the FOLA
- Council will supply dog waste bags and bin and rubbish bins
- A bench seat will be installed
- Shade shelters and drinking water for animals will also be provided.
Funding for the additional works has been provided by Council's section 7.12 developer contribution fund for new public infrastructure.
Overall, funding for the Jamberoo FOLA has come from Kiama Council and the NSW Government.
Council is excited to share the new Jamberoo fenced off-leash area for dogs with furry friends who live in our municipality and beyond.
The updated completion date for the Jamberoo fenced dog park is September 2025.
