Drugs and prohibited items seized in Darwin

Three days of mail screening at a Darwin mail distribution centre this week has resulted in a number of items, including drugs and prohibited weapons, being seized.

Northern Territory Joint Organised Crime Taskforce (JOCTF) and Northern Territory Police Drug and Organised Crime Section (DOCS), along with Australian Border Force and Australian Federal Police, conducted an operation targeting illicit substances and other items that are being sent through the post.

Approximately 8,500 parcels were screened, with the following items seized:

  • 7 grams of heroin
  • 10 grams of methamphetamine
  • 100 grams of cannabis plant material and small quantity of resin
  • 10 grams of cannabis seeds
  • 100 grams of synthetic cannabis
  • 1.8 kilograms of kava
  • Illegal steroids (20ml of liquid and 100 tablets)
  • Various unauthorised prescription medication
  • Prohibited weapons (flick knives, knuckle dusters, M4 replica machine gun and throwing knives)
  • Ice pipes

A total of 39 seizure notices were issued.

The heroin, cannabis plant material, resin and methamphetamine were referred to DOCS for further investigation.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karen Sanderson DOCS said she believes the work they are doing is producing results.

"We are continuing to screen for illicit substances and other items that are being sent through the post," she said.

"The amount of drugs seized is substantially less than past screenings and we believe these operations are having a positive impact in terms of preventing and disrupting the supply of drugs to Darwin."
