Emergency Departments Expand Rapid Respiratory Testing

Patients presenting to emergency departments with respiratory symptoms will now receive faster diagnosis and treatment, with rapid respiratory panel testing being expanded across selected public hospitals.

The new testing platform – successfully piloted at Armadale Health Service – can detect up to 15 viral and bacterial pathogens, including influenza, RSV and COVID‑19, in approximately 15 minutes. This represents a significant improvement on traditional off‑site laboratory testing, which could take up to six hours to return results.

Following the positive outcomes of the pilot, the rollout is now extending to Rockingham General Hospital, with phased implementation planned for additional metropolitan and regional emergency departments.

The Spotfire testing system enables clinicians to make earlier and more informed decisions about patient care. Faster results support timely treatment, more appropriate isolation of infectious patients, and improved patient flow during periods of high demand.

PathWest, in partnership with Health Service Providers, is delivering the expanded testing capability as part of broader efforts to strengthen preparedness for the winter season, when respiratory illnesses typically lead to increased hospital presentations.

Armadale Health Service reported that the pilot program improved turnaround times, reduced delays in clinical decision‑making and enhanced the overall patient experience. The expansion aims to replicate these benefits across other emergency departments.

For patients, the introduction of rapid respiratory testing means quicker assessment, earlier treatment and fewer delays during what can be a stressful time.
