Country soul queen and revered Indigenous singer/songwriter Emma Donovan, hot on the heels of supporting Texan country music superstar Charley Crockett, will bring her new show Songs, Stories and Soul from Family and Country, to the Potato Shed 8pm Saturday 13 April, sharing songs from her forthcoming album, Til My Song is Done.
As a First Nations artist, Emma is proudly spearheading efforts to put traditional languages on the music map.
On her mother's side, Emma is part of the famed Donovan family of singers of the Gumbaynggirr people, of what is now known as Northern New South Wales. On her father's side, Emma is of the Yamatji people, of what is now known as Western Australia.
Emma regularly performs songs in Gumbaynggirr and Noongar traditional languages, and her concert will showcase new work, giving us all a deeper understanding of Country and community.
Her highly anticipated solo album, out on 19 April, is a return home for Donovan, getting back to the sounds of country and her creative and performing roots, conveying a musical journey from singing those big country numbers as a kid, to joining her family performing church songs at community funerals, to the kitbag of skills picked up her over later collaborations in funk, soul and R&B.
A touring artist for over 20 years, Emma has shared her powerful stories and songs with audiences across the globe, supporting acts including Paul Kelly, The Tesky Brothers, Paul Grabowsky and the late Uncle Archie Roach AC, and Aunty Ruby Hunter.
