Engineering Fast Lane: Immersive Journey

Monash University

Emmy Drew went to the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne in 2012, when she was only ten. British driver Jenson Button won for McLaren and Australian Mark Webber, with Red Bull, came fourth. Something about the experience – the cars and the atmosphere – got under Emmy's skin. She was captivated.

This was the first time I had seen, heard, and even felt the rumble of what was then a V8 F1® engine. They were loud, sleek, and far more technologically advanced than anything else on display that weekend."

She was there with her Dad, but she didn't see many father/daughter days out at the track, and as far as she could see there were few women working in the garages, around the cars.

Now, 14 years later, Emmy, a Monash University undergraduate in Mechanical Engineering and Arts, has a sought-after student internship in the heart of the action with the Red Bull F1 team in the United Kingdom. She is literally working on planning parts and assembly for F1® engines. As part of her placement she was able to be in Melbourne for the FORMULA 1 QATAR AIRWAYS AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX 2026.

From watching her first Grand Prix at ten to working trackside with Red Bull, Emmy Drew joins fellow Monash engineers making their mark in motorsport.
