The Faculty of Engineering at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) Limited (CSHK) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 6 July 2026 to jointly establish the 'CSHK HKU Engineering Flagship Programme Scholarship'. This strategic collaboration aims to support outstanding undergraduate students across the Faculty's three flagship programmes, while promoting academic-industry collaboration and nurturing future engineering talent with a global perspective.
Professor David Srolovitz, Dean of Engineering and Mr Qimeng Chen, Director, Vice President and General Manager of Human Resources, CSHK, signed the MoU on behalf of the two parties. The ceremony was witnessed by Mr Ye Shuiqiu, Director-General of the Department of Social Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government (LOCPG) in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Professor Yang Wang, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Institutional Advancement) at HKU, and Mr Jie Zhang, Senior Vice President of China State Construction International Holdings Limited (CSCI).
Under the agreement, CSHK will contribute an annual donation of HK$400,000 for five consecutive academic years, from 2026/27 to 2030/31. This cumulative HK$2 million donation will fund scholarships for exceptional undergraduates enrolled in the Faculty's three flagship programmes—Bachelor of Engineering Elite Programme, Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Science in Engineering in Artificial Intelligence in Engineering Programme, and Global Engineering Business Programme.
Beyond financial support, CSHK will provide students with invaluable internship opportunities and executive mentorship, empowering them to master real-world operations and forge critical connections.
Professor Yang Wang, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Institutional Advancement) at HKU, said, "Guided by our motto 'Sapientia et Virtus,' we are committed to expanding the horizons of education and contributing to societal development. We believe that cultivating engineering talent capable of leading the future depends on a deep integration of academic research and industry practice. Our collaboration with CSHK represents a significant step toward building a resilient ecosystem of 'industry, academia, research, and application.' Through scholarships supporting our three flagship programs, combined with internships and mentorship opportunities, we aim to provide meaningful resources to students. More importantly, we are forging a vibrant platform where academic innovation and industry demands continually inspire and strengthen each other. We are confident that this partnership will inject fresh momentum into Hong Kong's innovation and technology landscape, fostering a new generation of engineering leaders—those equipped with a global outlook, professional expertise, and a spirit of innovation."
Mr Jie Zhang, Senior Vice President of CSCI, said, "With over a century of legacy, HKU Engineering's three flagship programmes bring together top-tier local and global talent – they represent the pinnacle of engineering education in Hong Kong. Having served this city for 47 years, CSHK has always placed talent at the heart of our commitment to urban development. This Flagship Programme Scholarship embeds industry resources into the university's talent pipeline, extending our industry-academia-research collaboration and supporting Hong Kong's vision as an international innovation and technology centre and a talent hub for the Greater Bay Area. We look forward to seeing these students become engineering leaders who bridge academia and industry, and connect Hong Kong with the world."
Professor David Srolovitz, Dean of Engineering, said, "We are honoured to partner with China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) Limited in establishing the CSHK-HKU Engineering Flagship Scholarship. This collaboration exemplifies our shared mission to nurturing exceptional talent and fostering innovation. By providing our students with vital support, industry engagement, and mentorship, we are empowering the next generation of engineers to lead Hong Kong's sustainable development and technological advancement. Together, we are shaping a brighter future for our city, our nation and beyond."
Mr Xinyu Zhang, Assistant President of China State Construction International Holdings Limited, Deputy General Manager of CSHK and an alumnus of HKU Engineering, said, "As a member of the engineering profession and an alumnus of the Faculty, it is my great honour to witness this collaboration between my company and my alma mater. CSHK has long been committed to nurturing young engineering talent, and the 'Build Your Future' Student Development Programme is a key part of that commitment. Through this scholarship for the three flagship programmes, together with internship and mentorship opportunities, I hope to help our juniors build a solid foundation between academia and practice, and contribute to Hong Kong's engineering sector in the future."
