
Local writers who live, work or study in Campbelltown are encouraged to submit their entries for the 2026 Fisher's Ghost Writing Prize .
This competition invites participants to enter their short stories, narrative non-fiction memoirs, or poetry addressing this year's theme of 'Years in the Making'.
"2026 marks the sixth running of the Fisher's Ghost Writing Prize and the quality of works continues to reach new heights each year. This is a fantastic opportunity for Campbelltown's creative talent to challenge themselves," Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr Darcy Lound said.
"We had a record number of more than 150 entrants in last year's competition and it would be wonderful to see us continue building on that outstanding effort in 2026," Cr Lound said.
The Fisher's Ghost Writing Prize celebrates local storytelling, creative expression and the growth of emerging writers. The competition is a highlight of the annual Festival of Fisher's Ghost program, with this year marking both the 200th anniversary of the legend of Fred Fisher's Ghost and the festival's 70th anniversary.
Created by Campbelltown City Library , the Fisher's Ghost Writing Prize provides emerging and established local writers with an opportunity to showcase their work and connect with the wider literary community. The Prize is managed and judged by WestWords .
Entrants can submit works in the following categories:
- Adult
- Grades 4-6
- Grades 7-9
- Grades 10-12
This year's adult category will award $300 to the winner and $100 to the highly commended entries. The student categories will award $100 to the winners and $50 to the highly commended entries.
"Each year, the Fisher's Ghost Writing Prize highlights the incredible local writing talent of Campbelltown. Last year, the Prize broke a new record for the number of entries from the region," WestWords Executive Director, Michael Campbell said.
"We are excited to return for the sixth year of the Fisher's Ghost Writing Prize, with the hopes that Campbelltown once again achieves a record-breaking number of poems and short stories," Mr Campbell said.
"With this being our sixth year, the celebration of the 70th Festival of Fisher's Ghost Festival, and the 200th anniversary of the 1826 sighting of Fred Fisher's Ghost, it only makes sense that this year's theme is 'Years in the Making'.
"Creativity is thriving in Campbelltown, and we look forward to being wowed by the writing that arises from this year's theme."
Eagle Vale Library and Campbelltown Library, HJ Daley will host a series of writing workshops during the July school holidays to help entrants develop their writing before submitting their works.
Entries are now open and close on Monday 7 September. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony later this year.
