Fees and charges largely unchanged

Cairns Regional Council's Fees and Charges Schedule will remain generally unchanged in 2019-20, with an across-the-board zero per cent increase adopted today.

While Council's main revenue source is from general rates and utility charges, fees and charges revenue is still significant at approximately $23 million (8%) of total operating revenue.

There has been no standard increase on the 2018/19 fees and charges, which is in line with the current practice of increasing every second year, however there are two changes that will affect the disposal of commercial waste.

The gate fee for commercial waste will increase to $15.00 (small – from $10.50), $38.00 (medium – from $21.50) and $76.50 (large – from $43.50) to account for the Queensland Government's waste levy which commences from 1 July 2019.

At the Material Recycling Facility, the gate fee charged for accepting recyclable material from commercial recycling collection businesses and other Councils will increase to $160 (from $105). This is intended to achieve full cost recovery on this service over time.

The third notable change in fees is for CBD regulated parking on street and the casual hourly fee which will increase by 20 cents each year on 1 January 2020 and 2021, as per Council's resolution in October 2017.
