Festive Flags 2023 Competition opens for young artists

The competition offers two categories this year, with 10 prizes up for grabs for children in the day care to prep category and 20 winning design spots for entrants in the grades one to 12 category.

The winning 20 designs will be transformed into festive flags and will be included in city dressing across Townsville during the festive season.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said she was excited to see this year's entries.

"I absolutely love seeing the creativity and joy in our festive flag designs each year. I'm already looking forward to seeing how the young people of Townsville turn the theme Outback Christmas into colourful and imaginative works of art," Cr Greaney said.

"At Council we're committed to providing opportunities for local artists and platforms for them to share their works, and this commitment includes our talented children. Each year we get to see the wonderment and amazement on the faces of our young artists, which I hope sparks a feeling of pride in each and every one of them.

"In our recent Community Sentiment Survey we had 86 per cent of Townsville residents support Council's goal of making Townsville a city where there's a lot for people to do, including in the arts and recreational activities.

"Getting involved in the competition is a great activity for children to try out at home or at school. I definitely want to encourage all children and teenagers to get involved for the chance to win a prize or be featured on one of 20 festive flag designs across the city this holiday season."

Entries into the Festive Flags 2023 Competition close at 5pm on Friday 15 September.
