First Metro Youth Step Up/Step Down Site Secured

  • Residential Youth Step Up/Step Down service for young people (16 to 24 years) who are experiencing mental health challenges
  • 10-bed service to provide short-term residential care in a safe, supportive environment
  • Centrally located close to public transport and local amenities
  • Cook Government committed to providing more support for mental health

The Cook Government is expanding its commitment to youth mental health with the announcement of Western Australia's first metropolitan Youth Step Up/Step Down (SUSD) service.

A significant milestone in the project has been achieved with a site centrally located in Balcatta being secured.

The Youth SUSD on Morley Drive will be close to public transport and local amenities, ensuring accessibility for young people and their families.

The new 10-bed residential service will provide short-term, community-based mental health support for young people.

Young people will be able to access a range of mental health services, including therapeutic support and counselling.

Additional assistance will also be provided to help young people transition back into their daily lives by building healthy routines and coping strategies.

While the service is located in the metropolitan area, it will be available to any young person across Western Australia.

The Youth SUSD is being delivered with the support of the City of Stirling.

As stated by Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey:

"This project demonstrates our commitment to delivering purpose-built infrastructure that supports better mental health outcomes for young people.

"Securing a centrally located site in Balcatta ensures the service will be accessible and integrated within the community, making it easier for young people and their families to get the support they need.

"Our government is rolling out a record $4.9 billion health infrastructure program, including the delivery of SUSD facilities across regional WA and now in Perth."

As stated by Health and Mental Health Minister Meredith Hammat:

"Western Australia's first Youth Step Up/Step Down facility marks a significant milestone in our commitment to strengthening mental health services for young people across the State.

"This service will allow young people to receive the care they need in a supportive, home-like setting, while remaining close to their families and communities.

"By investing in early intervention and recovery-focused services, we are ensuring young Western Australians can access the right care, at the right time, that meet their individual needs."

Comments attributed to Balcatta MLA David Michael:

"I'm pleased that Balcatta can host such an important service, which highlights the government's commitment to young Western Australians and their mental health.

"The Morley Drive location for the short-term residential facility offers easy access to public transport and local amenities for young people and their families."
