Five police vehicles damaged, man charged at Katoomba

A man will face court today after he allegedly damaged five police cars outside Katoomba Police Station yesterday.

About 2.15pm yesterday (Thursday 31 December 2020), a man attended the police station on Katoomba Street where he allegedly damaged five marked police vehicles by throwing bricks and rocks, smashing one windscreen and damaging windows and panels.

It is further alleged the man walked into the station and threw a large rock at the front counter perspex screen.

Police approached the 61-year-old man; however, he allegedly became aggressive and police deployed OC spray.

He was arrested and charged with 15 offences, including destroy/damage property (x7), affray, intimidate police (x3), assault police, and resist/hinder police.

The Leura man was bail refused to appear at Parramatta Bail Court tomorrow (Friday 1 January 2021).

Blue Mountains Duty Officer Inspector Sean McWhirter said the damage caused to the police vehicles rendered them inoperable.

"New Year's Eve is one of the busiest times of year for emergency services and the damaged sustained to these vehicles placed the whole community at risk," said Inspector McWhirter.
