Five Species Selected For Protection Statement Pilot

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

Five species have been selected to trial the development of protection statements.

Protection statements are a new tool under environmental law. They will give clear guidance to:

  • support proponents and decision-makers
  • help protect threatened plants, animals and ecological communities.

The species are:

  • Regent honeyeater
  • Southern bent-wing bat
  • Pygmy blue-tongue lizard
  • Grand spider orchid
  • Southern right whale.

These species:

  • live in different environments
  • are affected by different types of threats.

These 5 pilots will provide important learnings for development of protection statements over time.

Protection statements will be based on the best available science, data and information. They will explain what needs to be protected so a species or ecological community can survive and recover in the wild.

The statements complement and do not replace recovery plans or conservation advice.

If the pilots are successful, the Environment Minister may decide to make the protection statements for these species under law. More environmental reforms are coming into effect. Visit the environmental law reform pages to stay up to date.
